Cal's Camryn Rogers Leads Memorable Weekend for Elite Women's Athletes at Stanford Invitational

Canadian Olympian, collegiate record holder Rogers produces best hammer throw at Cobb Track and Angell Field, with Cook smashing prep 5,000 standard, Parker achieving NCAA Division 3 all-time 10,000 effort, in addition to Constien (1,500) and Chamberlain (3,200) setting historic meet marks

PALO ALTO, Calif. – It was a record-breaking weekend for several elite female athletes at the 47th Stanford Invitational, including the best hammer throw performance ever produced at Cobb Track and Angell Field, an all-time NCAA Division 3 mark in the 10,000 meters and a national high school record in the 5,000.

In addition, there were memorable meet records Friday in the women’s 1,500 meters from an Olympic steeplechase competitor, along with the top two all-time efforts in the prep girls 3,200.

Camryn Rogers of Cal, already the collegiate record holder in the hammer throw and an athlete who achieved the meet record last year, produced the best opening series of her career highlighted by a facility record 243 feet, 4 inches (74.18m) that gave the Canadian standout five of the top 10 performances in NCAA history.

Rogers, who finished fifth at the Tokyo Olympics, eclipsed the 2017 venue mark of 239 feet (72.84m) achieved by U.S. Olympian Gwen Berry at the TrackTown Summer Series. All six throws in her series surpassed 235 feet.

Natalie Cook of Lewisville Flower Mound High in Texas took third in the women’s invitational section of the 5,000 meters, clocking 15:25.93 to run faster than both the national all-time prep standard and American Under-20 outdoor record of 15:34.47 achieved in 2020 by Jenna Hutchins of Science Hill High in Tennessee. RECAP

Molly Grabill, a former Oregon standout now training professionally in Colorado, won the race in 15:22.97 and Welsh competitor Jenny Nesbitt – representing New Balance – was second in 15:24.59.

Colorado’s Abby Nichols achieved the top collegiate performance this season, finishing fourth in 15;27.11.

Kassie Parker of Loras finished fourth in the women’s invitational 10,000 in 33:03.61, smashing the Division 3 all-time mark of 33:21.80 established by Mary Proulx of Keane State that had stood since 2003.

Arkansas’ Lauren Gregory, making her 10,000 debut, won in a collegiate-leading 32:34.21, with Amelia Mazza-Downie of New Mexico finishing second in 32:55.26. Beth Kidger, a British athlete representing Brighton Phoenix, was third in 33:01.14.

Val Constien, who represented the U.S. in Tokyo in the 3,000 steeplechase, clocked a personal-best 4:09.97 in the invitational 1,500 to eclipse a 2004 meet record of 4:11.50 held by Nicole Teter.

In a rematch of their March 19 showdown at the Dublin Distance Fiesta, BYU-bound senior Riley Chamberlain of Del Oro High prevailed in the 3,200 by a 10:14.56 to 10:16.76 margin over Santa Rosa Montgomery freshman Hanne Thomsen.

Both athletes ran faster than the 2018 mark of 10:24.72 produced by Malibu graduate Claudia Lane.

Addy Townsend, a former NCAA Division 2 All-American at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, won the women’s invitational 800 by a 2:03.27 to 2:03.34 margin over adidas professional Anna Camp-Bennett, the reigning Division 1,500-meter winner.

Townsend also took second behind Constien in the 1,500 in 4:11.90.

Ezinne Abba of Cal contributed to three victories, sweeping the 100-meter dash and 200 in wind-legal marks of 11.35 and 23.18, along with helping the Golden Bears win the 4x100 relay in 44.45. USC held off Simon Fraser by a 3:41.51 to 3:42.35 advantage in the 4x400 relay.

Carmen Riano of Miami (Ohio) ran the second-fastest collegiate time this season in the invitational 3,000 steeplechase to prevail in a personal-best 9:57.42.

Marie-Jeanne Ourega, the reigning Division 2 outdoor champion in the long jump from Academy of Art, produced the top mark in the division this season with her victory following a wind-legal 21-1.25 (6.43m) effort.

Ayana Fields of Cal Poly Pomona, a Division 2 All-American, won the invitational 400 in 54.89 and Cal State Fullerton’s Maya Occiano clocked 1:01.31 to triumph in the 400 hurdles.

Allie Jones secured the lone invitational victory on the track for host Stanford, clocking 13.42 in the 100 hurdles.

Virginia Miller prevailed in the invitational javelin with a throw of 181-3 (55.26m) and Laurel Wong cleared 13-7.25 (4.15m) to triumph in the invitational pole vault for the Cardinal.

North Dakota State’s Amanda Anderson earned the win in the invitational discus throw with a 180-2 (54.93m) performance and Utah State’s Maia Garren was victorious in the invitational shot put at 51-1.50 (15.58m).

Cal’s Busola Akinduro captured the invitational triple jump with a mark of 42-8.25 (13.01m) and Hawaii’s Lilian Turbin cleared 5-10 (1.78m) to prevail in the invitational high jump.

Monte Vista’s Cate Peters produced two of the top high school performances at the two-day event, winning the invitational 400 in a personal-best 54.74 and contributing to victory in the distance medley relay in 12:09.14 by joining Sally Binder, Kinsey Pogue and Peyton Dolan.

JSerra’s Ashlee Gallegos just missed the meet record in the 800, but ran a lifetime-best 2:10.18, leading three Lions in the top six overall, along with Georgia Jeanneret (2:12.66) in third and Sydney Paulson (2:16.39) in sixth. Palo Alto’s Hillary Studdert placed second in 2:10.41.

JSerra also closed out the meet by clocking 3:56.13 in the 4x400 relay.

Ella Borsheim of Bellarmine Prep in Washington won the invitational 1,600 in 4:54.58, with Lauren Soobrian of Los Altos taking runner-up in 4:55.19 and Anastasia Snodgrass of JSerra finishing third in 4:57.78. Montgomery recovered from being tripped early in the race to place fourth in 4:58.51.

Y’Vette Harris of Stockton Lincoln swept the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, clocking 14.29 and 1:01.73, respectively.

Feyi Olukanni of Clovis East also won twice, securing the shot put at 43-10.50 (13.37m) and the discus at 146-7 (44.68m).

Aniaya Bishop of Cosumnes Oaks won the invitational 100 in 12.12, with Lynbrook earning the 4x100 victory in 47.82.

Elizabeth Churchill of Aptos won the high jump with a third-attempt clearance at 5-6.50 (1.69m) and Alison Sahaida of Oak Ridge cleared 12-3.50 (3.75m) in the pole vault.

Torre Anderson of Pleasanton Foothill triumphed in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.25 (5.49m) and Alameda’s Scarlett Dawson was the triple jump winner with a 36-4.75 (11.09m) effort.
